Abstract. Seismic radon station SRS-05 is widely used for monitoring the volumetric activity of radon, primarily in order to detect its increase as one of the precursors of earthquakes. Low sensitivity of the sensor does not allow real-time registration of background values of volumetric activities of radon isotopes 222Rn (radon) and 220Rn (thoron). At the same time, accurate measurement of background values of volumetric activities of radon isotopes is of great interest, especially for the purpose of studying the ionization and the electric state of a surface atmosphere. This paper proposes a method of determining mean background values of volumetric activities of radon isotopes by alpha spectra recorded by a seismic radon station for a long time (several days). Results of determination of background volumetric activities of 222Rn and 220Rn in soil and surface atmosphere at Borok Geophysical observatory are presented.
