Abstract. The article summarizes the materials of observations of the small-aperture seismic group (SSG) “Mikhnevo” for seismic events on the territory of the East European Platform based on the analysis of a large number of experimental data, a method for recognizing earthquakes and short-lived group explosions is proposed, based on the nature of the slope of the curve of the distribution of the ratio of the amplitude spectra of P and Lg waves lg(AP/ALg) relative to the frequency of oscillation. It is shown that the curve has a certain trend, the slope of which is different for explosions and earthquakes. A new criterion is proposed – a sign with a coefficient in the equation that connects the values of lg(AP/ALg) with the frequency. A negative trend with increasing frequency is typical for short-lived explosions, while a positive trend is typical for earthquakes. The method was tested on records of 405 industrial explosions and 24 earthquakes, located 350–900 km away from Mikhnevo.
